Mondo Candido

Out of stock

Candide, lovelorn youth and eternal seeker from the pages of Voltaire’s immortal classic novel, finds himself thrown out of an entirely comfortable castle after his affection for the baron’s daughter Cunegonde went a little too far down her thighs for her father’s taste. So Candide embarks on a wildly fantastic odyssey through space and time, from the battlefields of east and west into the arms of the Holy Inquisition and straight into modern Manhattan, always hot on the heels of his one true love who has, however, succumbed to group sex and drugs long ago. Finally Candide sees the world he once tried to understand for what it really is: an immoral reflection of its degenerated inhabitants. Mondo Candido finds colourful pictures for this epiphany, drenched equally in genius and madness. Gualtiero Jacopetti’s last film (his co-director Franco Prosperi later gave us the brilliant animal exploiter Wild Beasts) is a delirious masterpiece, a wild trip chock-full of strange encounters to the wonderful music of composer Riz Ortolani, and ultimately a final proof for Jacopetti’s theory that man has gone to the dogs already. Mondo Candido is his bizarre legacy.
